Our Backyard Jungle

January 30, 2010

I realized that it’s been more than two months since I’ve posted any photos of our backyard.  We have a good excuse for that though; we haven’t done anything to it, other than mess it up.

Our backyard has turned into quite a jungle, due to the combination of us neglecting to hire a gardener or buy a lawn mower, and lot of rain in the past week.  Unfortunately, the weeds outnumber the grass by 10:1, but the clover is rather pretty.  Anyone have any experience with clover instead of grass for a lawn?

This photo is a view of the yard as seen from the back steps.  It’s full of junk, it’s overgrown, and we still haven’t planted any bamboo to hide the apartment complex back there.  Notice the bushes near our house on the right-hand side.  The next photo reveals what is hidden beyond them…

That thing needs to be torn down before the housing inspector comes back in a month.  It’s about 12ft x 12ft x 7ft tall.

This photo shows the yard from the far back corner.  There’s so much space!  What should we do with it all?  We’d love to hear suggestions.  The area by the garage (where that big pile of broken wood is) is going to be my vegetable garden.  And the 1/4 of the  yard near the house will be turned into a patio.  But what about the rest of it?

By the way, that cement thing nearest the camera is an incinerator for trash that was used back in the early 1900’s.

Meet doggy!  He only wakes us up at night now and then… and barks at us when we are impertinent enough to walk around our yard… and when we slam our front door too loudly… and whenever Souki goes outside.   On the whole, he seems to be getting a bit better though.   And yes, currently we can see right into the neighbor’s backyard through our beautiful chain-link fence.

As for house-work, I finished up those shelves and put them back in our closet.  Hooray for storage space!  This is a huge closet by bungalow standards, being about 8 ft long by 3 ft wide.  The shelves go way at the back of the closet, and that pipe on the left hand side was a vent for a gas furnace at some point.  Alex will be tearing it out in the near future.  Alex’s accomplishments today include hanging fluorescent lights in the garage, fixing another router, and buying wood for kitchen shelves and drawers.  In theory, we should have some new drawers and cabinet doors by tomorrow evening.

I can’t wait to see the updates to the kitchen!!!

Votes for the backyard: volleyball net, horseshoe pits, in-ground pool, hot tub under a gazebo, tiki bar.
