Back Yard Action

April 20, 2010

The back yard of the house has definitely been the focus of recent efforts.  This past weekend we continued with the theme.  I had put together four boxes to make raised beds for Alexandra to grow vegetables in.   The boxes have been sitting around looking very forlorn for a few weeks now.  So, this weekend I finally had time and energy to go out and put them in place.  Of course first I had to remove all the existing weeds and grass, turn over the soil to loosen it up, then grade the area so it was at least approximately level.

By preparing the site well it was pretty easy to put the boxes in place, level them up and fill them up.  Now she can stop growing stuff in various random plastic nursery buckets.  I still need to make caps for all the corners of both these and the bamboo boxes, but for the most part I think I am done shoveling dirt and building raised garden beds (at least for now).

The other big excitement for the weekend was calling a junk removal service and having all the scrap wood, junk, tree limbs, and concrete removed from the yard.  This included the 10’x10′ pad that the strange roof we tore down was over, an 8′ cracked pond that had been uplifted by tree roots, an old trash incinerator, and about 20 feet of sidewalk that randomly stuck out into the yard.  This still leaves about 10 stumps throughout the yard that have to be dug up and some odds and ends that still need to be tossed.  As a whole though, the yard is getting much better.  Tomorrow I hope to acquire a weed whacker and lawn mower which will truly make a difference.

The garage still doesn’t have studs, but the pile of 2×4’s is sitting in front of it making me feel guiltier with every passing day.  Hopefully this weekend will finally prove to be the weekend of garage fixing.
