In California, termites are a huge problem, and when we bought this house, we knew what we were getting into.

It is recommended that wooden houses in Southern California be fumigated every 5 to 10 years.  In addition, they should be inspected for termites annually.    Fumigation is a big deal out here, as the entire house has to be covered with a tent for  three days, and the occupants have to move out.

This Thanksgiving was our first good opportunity to have the house fumigated while we were out of town.   We had to seal everything edible in special bags.  That includes everything in the fridge and freezer, medicines, dog food, etc.  Indoor plants also had to be removed, and obviously Souki couldn’t be left behind either.  On the plus side, our house is now 100% free of vermin:  No rats, mice, cockroaches, termites, or fleas could have possibly survived the weekend.

The humorous photos below are thanks to a friend who was willing to drive to our house last weekend to snap pictures.  Thank you!

I am so glad that we weren’t at home to watch our house get tented.  It looks horrific.

Note the TV antenna in the driveway.  It had to be removed from the roof so that it wouldn’t puncture the tent.

Even the garage was fumigated.

They could have at least used better colors to make it look more festive. I have never seen a tent with brown and black.

    Dear Alex and Alexandra,

The house looks ‘marvy’…lol…(forgive the Gilligan’s Island coloq.. Mr. Howell just knows how to say it…lol…) WOW….just great kids! I had our restaurant in Long Beach tented way back in 1983 to get rid of crawly things….It works, and lasts over the long haul…All is well here. Aunt Tuny and I can’t wait to see you at Christmas. You all had great vision for your house. Great job. Auny Tuny and I would love to ‘come out’ (for a visit, not the with your mom. Perhaps in late winter.
    Love you two…..
